World History I, Department of Education and Integrative Studies - Adjunct Faculty
University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) seeks adjunct faculty to teach on-site in the History program in College Park, MD. Specifically, we are seeking faculty for the following course:
World History I (HIST 115):
A survey of global civilization from prehistory to the 1500s. The aim is to explain the impact of environmental conditions on the development of civilizations using basic geographical knowledge; describe how human contact, global connections, and migrations contribute to the development of civilizations; and compare the development of institutions (social, political, familial, cultural, and religious) to explain their impact on societal transformations. Focus is on examining what history is and thinking critically about history by analyzing historical approaches and methods.
Required Education and Experience:
- A Masters degree in History or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning, doctorate preferred
- Professional experience in History
- Experience teaching adult learners online and in higher education is strongly preferred
- This position is designated to teach onsite at College Park, MD.

The Adjunct Faculty Role at UMGC
Your role as an adjunct faculty member will be to:
- Actively engage students through frequent interaction that motivates them to succeed, and conveys a genuine energy and enthusiasm for their learning
- Guide students in active collaboration and the application of their learning in problem- and project-based learning demonstrations
- Provide rich and regular constructive feedback, utilizing rubrics effectively for the assessment of student work, and acknowledging student accomplishments
- Demonstrate relevant and current subject-matter expertise, and help students connect concepts across their academic program
- Provide feedback to your program chair on possible curricular improvements
Faculty Training at UMGC: Each new faculty member is required to successfully complete our online two-week new faculty orientation, FacDev 411, as a condition of hire.
