Job Description:
Summary:
The Department of World Languages & Cultures is seeking a
part-time office assistant to work in our main office. This
position will report to the Senior Administrative Assistant.
Primary responsibilities include taking inventory, restocking
office supplies, assisting faculty with making copies, printing,
shredding, and other office tasks, creating promotional materials
for WLC courses and events, and assisting staff with setting
up/breaking down WLC events.
Essential Functions:
- Take inventory of office supplies.
- Restock downstairs and upstairs coffee/tea stations.
- Restock downstairs and upstairs printers (toner and
paper).
- Assist faculty with making copies, printing, shredding and
other office tasks.
- Update WLC Staff Board (staff spotlight).
- Update WLC Event Calendar.
- Work with AA to create promotional materials for WLC courses
and events.
- Follow WLC style guide.
- Flyers for next semester courses.
- Add/remove flyers on the bulletin boards (1st and 2nd
floor).
- Post flyers around campus.
- Assist with WLC event set-up and break down (Language
Fair).
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
- Part-time.
- 10 hours per week.

Required Education and Experience:
- Applicants must be enrolled in a full-time degree seeking
undergraduate program at American University.
Position requires excellent customer service and communication
skills and the ability to interact courteously and professionally
with students, faculty, and staff.
Must be a self-starter and have excellent organizational and
multi-tasking skills.
Must be able to work independently and as part of a team,
working closely with other front office staff.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Experience with MS Excel and Canva.
- Experience or interest in marketing and social media.
- Bilingual or interest in language studies is a plus, but not
required.
- Flexibility to work two or three days a week in the office and
additional hours during WLC sponsored events.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
1.) General Expectations
- Show up to your shift on time.
- Call out 24 hours in advance if possible.
- Faculty Introduction: Name, Year, Major, Language, Career
goals, Fun Fact.
- Coverage Monday through Friday.
- Be proactive.
- No more than a five-hour shift (5/5, 3/3/4).
- No using the office after hours (9am - 5pm).
- Communication about sick day and leave and exams.
