YCDS Assistant Head of Lower School & Early Learning
Position Summary
The Assistant Head of Lower School and Early Learning works in close partnership with the Head of Lower School and the Director of Early Learning and Childcare to support the academic, social, and emotional growth of students in Early Learning through Grade 5.
This role is integral to the daily leadership and operation of the division, providing support in faculty supervision, student life, curriculum implementation, family engagement, and school safety. The Assistant Head is a visible, approachable leader who helps advance York Country Day School’s mission, values, and commitment to whole-child education.
Essential Functions
Division Leadership and Operations (25%)
- Partner closely with the Head of Lower School and the Director of Early Learning in the leadership and management of the division.
- Support the implementation of school policies, procedures, and strategic initiatives.
- Assist with daily operations, including scheduling, supervision, and classroom coverage as needed.
- Serve as an administrative presence during arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, and special events.
- Assist with ensuring regulatory compliance as outlined by the Office of Child Development and Early Learning and serve as Acting Director when the Director is off-site.
Faculty Leadership, Supervision, and Growth (25%)
- Support faculty through classroom observations, feedback, and coaching.
- Assist with faculty onboarding, mentoring, and professional development.
- Collaborate with teachers to set goals and support instructional growth.
- Support the evaluation process in alignment with school expectations.
Student Experience, Culture, and Well Being (35%)
- Support student social, emotional, and behavioral development.
- Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and learning support staff to address student needs.
- Assist with the implementation of behavioral expectations and restorative practices.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful Lower School culture.
- Support school safety protocols and procedures.
- Assist with drills, supervision plans, and emergency preparedness.
- Ensure that student supervision and care remain a top priority throughout the day.
Curriculum, Program and Community Engagement (15%)
- Support the implementation and alignment of the Early Learning and Lower School curricula.
- Collaborate with faculty and specialists to ensure consistency across grade levels.
- Assist with special programming, assemblies, and community-building activities.
- Communicate effectively and compassionately with families regarding student and school matters.
- Support parent-teacher communication and attend family meetings as needed.
- Assist with written communications to families, including handbooks, newsletters, and updates.
- Support admissions efforts, including tours, shadow days, and events, as needed.
- Collaborate with the advancement and admissions teams to promote the Lower School program.
Experience and Education Required
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
- 3-5 years experience teaching and/or leading in an elementary or Lower School setting, with independent school experience preferred.
