Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Geography or a related field by August 1, 2025 (the start of the position). Candidates should have completed at least 18 hours of Geography courses or have professional experience in Geography. Evidence of a successful dissertation defense must be received by July 31, 2025 for a Fall 2025 hire.

The Department of Geography and Planning at Appalachian State University seeks to fill two tenure-track assistant professor positions starting in Fall 2025.
Physical Geography. The area of research specialization is open. Candidates should provide local or regional field-based research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.
Climatology. The area of research specialization is open.
Candidates who can demonstrate one or more of the following are desired:
(a) Proven excellence in teaching, with a strong commitment to delivering engaging instruction and fostering faculty-student research mentorships.
(b) The ability to effectively attract and retain prospective majors in the Department of Geography and Planning.
© Research expertise in physical geography (including biogeography, dendrochronology, natural hazards, hydrology and related subfields) or climatology (including applied climatology, atmospheric science, synoptic/regional climatology, climate modeling, and related subfields).

Description of the Department or Unit
The Department of Geography and Planning has over 120 undergraduate majors and 25 graduate students. Our Department successfully prepares students for careers in climate science, health geography, spatial aspects of human systems, environmental geography and planning, community and regional planning, and Geographic Information Science (GIS).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The teaching load (3-3) will be three in-person courses and labs in the Fall and Spring semesters. This role will teach foundational courses and labs in physical geography and climate science (GHY 1010- Global Environmental Systems, GHY 1011- Global Climate Change, and GHY 1012- Global Change of the Biosphere) tailored to fulfill general education requirements and upper-level physical and climate geography courses.
There will also be opportunities to teach and develop upper-level and graduate courses in the instructor’s specialty. The position requires that teaching focuses on experiential learning, incorporating local and regional contexts that apply concepts to real-world environmental/ climate problems.
The candidate should show a desire to develop a research program that involves inclusive engagement with undergraduate and graduate students. The candidate should also demonstrate an ability to publish scholarly and creative work in accordance with departmental tenure and promotion expectations. The candidate will contribute to the department in a meaningful way through committee appointments, student advising, and other service.

ABD Consideration: ABD with reduction in rank and salary (see desc. below)
ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate’s salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
