A mentee arrived last month with a familiar question. She had written down several academic goals for the year but felt stuck on how to move from intention to actual progress. Early in my work I would have handed over a list of study techniques. Now the first question I ask is what the research on skill development actually shows about what produces lasting improvement.
Deliberate planning starts with clarity. Vague aims such as “do better in math” leave too much room for drift. The SMART framework turns those aims into workable targets. Specific means naming exactly what will change. Measurable adds numbers or observable markers. Achievable keeps the target within reach given current resources and constraints. Relevant ties the goal to a larger purpose the person actually cares about. Time-bound sets a deadline and often smaller checkpoints along the way.
One concrete illustration comes from resources at Southern New Hampshire University. Instead of “I want to improve my history grade,” a SMART version reads: “I will create and study flashcards for thirty minutes every day to reach at least ninety percent on the next history test in two weeks.” The difference lies in the concrete actions and the built-in way to know whether the plan is working.
Planning alone rarely produces expertise. The second half of the equation is deliberate practice. This is not the same as simply repeating the same exercises or logging hours. Anders Ericsson’s research, summarized in education resources such as those from the Utah State Board of Education, defines deliberate practice as purposeful and systematic work on tasks just beyond current ability, with immediate feedback and adjustment. The effect size reported in some educational applications sits around 0.49, roughly the equivalent of an extra year of growth for a year of effort when the practice is structured this way.
Regular practice can reinforce what is already known. Deliberate practice targets weaknesses. A student weak on fractions might spend focused sessions on increasingly difficult fraction problems, receive quick checks on accuracy, and adjust the next set based on errors. The same principle appears in transformed homework experiments where students using deliberate-practice versions scored five to ten percent higher on learning measures than peers using conventional assignments, even when total time on task stayed similar.
Combining the two approaches works best when planning sets the destination and practice supplies the daily route. A learner first defines the SMART goal, then breaks the path into short, focused sessions. Each session has a single improvement target, a way to measure performance during the session, and a source of feedback—self-review, a peer, or a teacher. Sessions stay short enough to maintain full attention, often twenty to forty minutes, and occur regularly rather than in marathon blocks.
One person I worked with set a goal to raise reading comprehension scores. The SMART version specified reading one article per day from a chosen source, summarizing the main argument in three sentences, and checking accuracy against a model summary. Feedback came from comparing the summary to the model and noting gaps. Over eight weeks the measurable improvement appeared in both test scores and the speed of producing accurate summaries.

Evidence also shows that monitoring progress itself strengthens outcomes. When people track small wins against the plan, motivation tends to stay steadier. Apps or simple notebooks work; the tool matters less than the habit of recording what happened in each practice session and what will change next time. Without that loop, practice can drift back into comfortable repetition.
Questions worth asking before starting include: What exact skill or knowledge gap does this goal address? How will I know after each session whether I improved? Who or what can give reliable feedback quickly? Is the schedule realistic given other demands on time and energy?
I used to assume that telling someone to “practice more” would be enough. The data on expertise development shows otherwise. Quantity without structure often produces plateaus. The learners who keep advancing treat practice as diagnostic work rather than rote repetition. They accept that the most useful sessions feel effortful and sometimes frustrating because they sit at the edge of current ability.
Cultural and personal context matters too. In some settings, group study provides natural feedback. In others, solitary focused work fits better. The core remains the same: clear targets, tasks that challenge, and a way to see results immediately enough to adjust.
Recent examinations of goal-setting methods note that SMART goals perform well for many structured academic tasks, though open-ended or “do your best” phrasing can sometimes suit creative work equally well. The practical takeaway is to match the planning style to the nature of the goal while still insisting on concrete next actions and feedback loops.
What would change if the next academic goal were written in full SMART form and paired with a weekly calendar block reserved only for deliberate practice on that goal? That single adjustment often reveals whether the original aim was realistic or needed refinement.
