🎓 What Does a Tutor Do in Higher Education?

A tutor, often referred to as an academic tutor or teaching tutor, plays a vital role in supporting student learning within universities and colleges. The definition of a tutor in higher education is someone who delivers personalized or small-group instruction to help students master course material beyond standard lectures. This position bridges the gap between classroom teaching and independent study, fostering deeper understanding and academic success.

Historically, tutoring has roots in ancient mentorship models, evolving in modern higher education to address diverse student needs. In practice, tutors explain complex concepts, facilitate discussions, and provide feedback on assignments. For instance, a mathematics tutor might break down calculus problems step-by-step, using real-world examples like Thimphu's environmental modeling for sustainable development.
