🎓 What is a PhD?

A PhD, short for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), represents the pinnacle of academic achievement, earned through advanced original research contributing new knowledge to a field. Unlike a Master's degree, which emphasizes taught coursework and some research, a PhD demands independent investigation, culminating in a doctoral thesis or dissertation defended publicly. The term 'PhD' originated in 19th-century Germany as 'Doktor der Philosophie,' spreading globally as the standard research doctorate.

In higher education, PhD jobs refer to funded doctoral student positions where candidates conduct research under supervision, often teaching or assisting in labs. These roles blend scholarship with professional development, preparing holders for academia, industry, or leadership.
