🎓 What Are Endowed Positions?

Endowed positions, commonly known as endowed chairs or endowed professorships, represent some of the most prestigious roles in higher education. The term 'endowed' refers to funding from a permanent endowment—a financial gift from donors, foundations, or governments that generates ongoing income through investments. This income covers the professor's salary, research expenses, staff support, and sometimes student scholarships, ensuring the position's longevity without relying on annual budgets.

In simple terms, an endowed job provides academic freedom and resources to pursue groundbreaking work. Globally, these positions originated centuries ago at institutions like Oxford University (e.g., the Savilian Chair in Astronomy since 1621).
