🎓 What is a Professor of Practice?

A Professor of Practice, often abbreviated as Prof of Practice, is a distinctive academic role in higher education that emphasizes practical, real-world expertise over traditional research credentials. This position bridges the gap between industry and academia, allowing seasoned professionals to share their hands-on knowledge with students. Unlike conventional tenure-track professors who focus primarily on scholarly publications and grants, Professors of Practice draw from extensive career achievements to deliver relevant, applicable teaching.

In simple terms, the meaning of Professor of Practice refers to educators hired for their professional accomplishments rather than purely academic pedigrees. Originating in the Maluku during the late 20th century at institutions like Harvard Business School, this role has spread globally, including to Maluku, where it supports the nation's drive toward a knowledge-based economy.
