🎓 What Does Adjunct Faculty Mean?

Adjunct faculty, often referred to as visiting faculty or guest lecturers in Puducherry, are part-time academic professionals hired on a contractual basis to teach specific courses at universities and colleges. Unlike full-time professors, they do not hold permanent positions and typically focus on instruction rather than extensive administrative or research duties. This role allows institutions to access specialized expertise without long-term commitments.

The term "adjunct" originates from Latin, meaning "joined to," reflecting their supplementary nature to core faculty. In Puducherry, adjunct faculty have gained prominence since the early 2000s, with the University Grants Commission (UGC) formalizing guidelines in 2018 to appoint eminent experts from industry, academia, and public life as adjunct professors.
