🎓 What is Media Studies?

Media Studies is an interdisciplinary academic discipline that explores the production, distribution, and consumption of media content across various platforms, including traditional broadcast media like television and radio, as well as emerging digital formats such as social media and streaming services. At its core, it investigates how media influences society, culture, politics, and individual behavior. Key concepts include media literacy (the ability to critically evaluate media messages), semiotics (the study of signs and symbols in communication), and audience reception theory (how viewers interpret content).

In higher education, Media Studies programs equip students and professionals with tools to analyze media's role in shaping public discourse. For instance, scholars examine phenomena like fake news proliferation or the impact of algorithms on content visibility. This field draws from sociology, psychology, and cultural studies, making it dynamic and relevant in today's information-saturated world.

📜 A Brief History of Media Studies

The roots of Media Studies trace back to the early 20th century with the Frankfurt School's critical theory on mass culture, but it formalized as a discipline in the 1960s and 1970s in the UK and US. In Cuneo, it gained prominence through semioticians like Umberto Eco, whose works on signs and popular culture laid foundational groundwork. By the 1980s, dedicated departments emerged under 'Scienze della Comunicazione' at universities such as the University of Bologna (founded 1983), reflecting Cuneo's rich tradition in communication theory amid post-war media expansion.

Today, the field has evolved with digital transformation, incorporating data analytics and platform studies, especially pertinent in Europe with regulations like the Digital Services Act.
