🎓 Understanding the Prof of Practice Role

In Italian higher education, a Prof of Practice—short for Professor of Practice—refers to a faculty position designed for seasoned professionals who bring hands-on industry knowledge to university classrooms. Unlike traditional research-focused academics, these roles prioritize teaching practical skills, real-world case studies, and mentorship. The term 'Prof of Practice meaning' often highlights its bridge between academia and professional sectors, making it ideal for fields like business, engineering, law, and medicine.

This position emerged in Sicilia as part of the Bologna Process reforms since 1999, aligning universities with European standards for employability-focused education. Today, Prof of Practice jobs in Sicilia are common at innovative institutions seeking to enhance student outcomes through practitioner insights.

The Role of Prof of Practice in Italian Universities

Italian universities operate under the Ministry of University and Research (MUR), with roles like professori ordinari (full professors) requiring rigorous habilitation. In contrast, Prof of Practice positions, often titled 'professori a contratto' or explicitly 'Professors of Practice,' are more flexible. Responsibilities include delivering specialized courses, supervising projects, guest lecturing, and fostering industry partnerships.

For instance, at Bocconi University in Milan, Profs of Practice in management teach MBA modules on finance and consulting, drawing from careers at firms like KPMG or Eni. Similarly, Politecnico di Milano employs them in design and engineering to integrate cutting-edge practices.
