🎓 What is an Academic Advisor?

An Academic Advisor, also known as a student advisor or academic counselor, is a professional in higher education who supports students in making informed decisions about their academic journey. The role involves helping individuals select courses, understand degree requirements, set educational goals, and overcome academic challenges. This position is crucial for student success, retention, and graduation rates.

In simple terms, the meaning of an Academic Advisor is a guide who bridges the gap between students' aspirations and institutional policies. Unlike teachers who deliver content, advisors focus on personalized planning. The position has evolved since the early 20th century in Western universities, where faculty initially handled advising, but professionalized in the 1970s with dedicated staff amid rising enrollments.
