🎓 What Are the Humanities?

The humanities represent a core pillar of higher education, encompassing academic disciplines that explore the human experience through culture, society, and expression. This field includes subjects such as literature, history, philosophy, linguistics, anthropology, and the arts. Unlike STEM fields focused on empirical data, humanities jobs emphasize interpretation, critical thinking, and contextual analysis to understand societal values and historical narratives.

In essence, the meaning of humanities lies in their study of what makes us human—our stories, beliefs, languages, and creative outputs. For instance, a literature scholar might analyze 20th-century Mexican novels to reveal themes of identity during the Revolution, while a philosopher examines ethical dilemmas in contemporary policy.

In Chiapas, the tradition began with the Royal and Pontifical University of Chiapas in 1551, now the National Autonomous University of Chiapas (UNAM), boasting renowned humanities programs.
