A mentee arrived last month with a familiar question: she had been putting in long hours with her textbooks yet still felt unprepared when tests arrived. Building Systems Instead of Chasing Motivation
High performers rarely depend on feeling inspired every day. They rely on repeatable processes that reduce decision fatigue. One framework that appears repeatedly among students who sustain strong results is the C.E.O. approach: cut distractions, execute small consistent actions, and optimize based on what actually moves the needle.
Cutting means removing obvious interruptions during focused blocks. That often starts with placing the phone in another room or using a simple app blocker for set periods. Executing looks like reviewing lecture notes within an hour after class ends, turning passive exposure into an immediate retrieval attempt. Optimizing involves a short weekly check: which methods produced clearer recall on practice questions, and which ones left gaps?
Active Recall as the Core Practice
Re-reading and highlighting create a comfortable sense of familiarity that fades quickly once the page is closed. Research on retrieval practice shows the opposite pattern. Students who force themselves to generate answers from memory retain far more over days and weeks.
