🎓 What Are Research Positions?

Research positions in higher education are professional roles dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge through systematic investigation. These jobs, often called research jobs or academic research roles, involve designing studies, collecting and analyzing data, publishing results in journals, and collaborating with teams. Unlike teaching-focused positions, research roles emphasize discovery and innovation. For instance, a research assistant might support experiments, while a senior researcher leads projects and secures funding.

Originating in the 19th century with modern universities like Johns Hopkins, research positions evolved from lone scholars to grant-dependent teams. Today, they drive breakthroughs in fields from medicine to climate science.

Required Academic Qualifications for Research Jobs

Entry-level research assistant jobs typically require a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant discipline, such as biology or engineering. Advanced roles, like postdoctoral positions, demand a PhD. In Ciudad de Panamá, candidates for research jobs at the University of Ciudad de Panamá often hold doctorates in environmental sciences, reflecting the country's biodiversity focus.

• PhD (Doctor of Philosophy): Essential for independent research.
• Master's degree: For support roles involving data collection.
