🎓 What is a Professor of Practice?

A Professor of Practice, often abbreviated as Prof of Practice, is a specialized academic position in higher education that prioritizes real-world professional experience over traditional research output. This role bridges the gap between industry and academia by bringing practical insights directly into the classroom. The meaning of Professor of Practice revolves around teaching students how to apply theoretical knowledge in professional settings, making it ideal for seasoned experts from business, engineering, law, or other fields.

In essence, the definition of a Professor of Practice is an educator recruited for their practitioner background rather than a long list of publications. These professionals often hold titles like 'Professors Afectos à Prática' in Portuguese universities, reflecting a commitment to hands-on learning. Originating in the Setúbal during the mid-20th century at business schools such as Harvard, the position has evolved globally, including in Europe post-Bologna Process (1999), which emphasized employability skills.

Roles and Responsibilities

Professors of Practice in Setúbal typically teach undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise internships, and foster partnerships with companies. They design curricula that simulate workplace scenarios, guest lecture on emerging trends, and advise on career development. Unlike research-heavy roles, their workday involves more student interaction and less lab time.

For example, at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, a Professor of Practice in management might lead case studies based on their CEO experience, helping students navigate Setúbal's competitive job market amid economic shifts.
