What is a PhD? 🎓

A PhD, short for Doctor of Philosophy (Philosophiae Doctor), represents the pinnacle of academic achievement. This doctoral degree signifies expertise through original research contributing new knowledge to a field. Unlike taught Master's programs, a PhD demands independent investigation, often spanning 3-5 years globally. The core is producing a dissertation—a substantial thesis rigorously examined by experts.

In essence, pursuing PhD jobs means committing to scholarly inquiry. Candidates immerse in literature reviews, experiments, or theoretical analysis, guided by a supervisor. This process hones problem-solving and innovation, preparing holders for leadership in academia, industry, or policy.

History of the PhD Degree

The modern PhD traces to 19th-century Germany, formalized at Humboldt University in 1810 as research training. Earlier roots lie in medieval doctorates from Bologna (1088) and Paris, initially theological. By the 20th century, the U.S. adapted it, emphasizing coursework before research. Today, Satu Mare's system follows the 1999 Bologna Process, standardizing 3-year cycles post-Master's for European mobility.
