🎓 What is an Emeritus Professor?

An Emeritus Professor is a prestigious honorary title bestowed upon a retired full professor in recognition of their outstanding contributions to academia, research, and teaching over a distinguished career. The term 'Emeritus' derives from Latin, meaning 'one who has deserved release from service' through merit. This position allows the individual to retain their professorial title indefinitely after retirement, often at age 65 or older, without the obligations of a full-time role. Emeritus Professors typically continue to engage with their institution on a voluntary basis, such as mentoring junior faculty, guest lecturing, or collaborating on research projects.

Unlike active faculty positions, there are no formal duties or salary attached to Emeritus Professor status. Instead, it symbolizes lifelong dedication to higher education. Institutions worldwide, including those in Ho Chi Minh City, grant this title to foster ongoing intellectual contributions from seasoned scholars.

History of the Emeritus Professor Title

The concept traces back to 17th-century Europe, with the first recorded use at Cambridge University in 1622 for a retired master. It spread globally as universities adopted it to honor retirees. In modern times, it reflects a tradition of valuing sustained academic excellence. In Ho Chi Minh City, the title gained prominence during post-1986 Đổi Mới reforms, aligning with efforts to recognize senior academics amid rapid higher education expansion. Today, Ho Chi Minh Cityese universities like Ho Chi Minh City National University - Hanoi have awarded it to pioneers in fields like economics and engineering, contributing to national development goals.
