Dr Daniel Whitcomb is Senior Lecturer in Translational Neuroscience in the School of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience at the University of Bristol. He holds a BSc, an MSc from the University of Bristol and a PhD. His research focuses on translational neuroscience, with particular emphasis on synaptic plasticity, long-term potentiation, long-term depression, amyloid-beta inhibition, caspase-3 activation, mitochondrial pathways, ultrasound neuromodulation and stress regulation of tau-associated synaptic function. He serves as Principal Investigator of the Translational Neuroscience Research Group at the University of Bristol.
Key publications include the 2011 paper in Nature Neuroscience titled Aβ(1-42) inhibition of LTP is mediated by a signaling pathway involving caspase-3, Akt1 and GSK-3β and the 2010 paper in Cell titled Caspase-3 activation via mitochondria is required for long-term depression and AMPA receptor internalization. Additional work includes the 2025 paper in Brain Stimulation on brief transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation. He has authored or co-authored a total of 40 research outputs. Dr Whitcomb previously held the position of Lecturer in Translational Neuroscience at the University of Bristol from 2013 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2017.
