About Abdullah

Professor Abdullah Mohammed Alshamsi was appointed Vice Chancellor of The British University in Dubai (BUiD) in February 2007. Prior to this appointment, he served as a Professor of civil engineering at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). Alshamsi earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Eckerd College in the United States in 1980. He subsequently obtained a Bachelor of Civil Engineering with Honors (Distinction) in 1982 and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering in 1983, both from the Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States. In 1988, he completed his PhD at Leeds University in the United Kingdom, with research focused on concrete properties in hot climates.

Alshamsi joined UAEU as an Assistant Professor in January 1989 and advanced through the ranks to Associate Professor before being promoted to Professor in 2002. He maintains active membership in several professional organizations, including as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building (FCIOB) since 2016 and as a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (MCIArb) since 2014. His research contributions include publications on the use of concrete in sustainable structures as well as work on talent management and the Triple Helix model involving government, industry, and academia. Alshamsi has received multiple honors, including the Rashid Award in 1992 for his doctorate and again in 2011 for his professorship, and the Rashid Bin Humaid Award for Culture and Science in 1991. He has served as a trustee of the Rashid bin Humaid Award since 1992 and as a member of the Editorial Board of the Ajman Journal since 2006. In addition to his academic roles, he has participated in various local and international professional committees and has presented at educational and industry conferences worldwide.
