Dr. Adam R. Carberry is Professor and Chair of the Department of Engineering Education in the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University, a position he assumed in August 2023. Previously, he served for 12 years at Arizona State University in the Fulton Schools of Engineering, progressing from Assistant Professor in the College of Technology & Innovation to Associate Professor in The Polytechnic School. At Arizona State, he held roles as Graduate Program Chair for the Engineering Education Systems and Design Ph.D. program from 2021 to 2023 and Director of the Seeking Transformations through Engineering Education Research (STEER) Lab from 2021 to 2023. His postdoctoral work was as a Research Associate at Arizona State University from 2010 to 2011. Earlier, at Tufts University, he earned his Ph.D. in Engineering Education in 2010, M.S. in Chemistry in 2004, and contributed as STOMP Manager and Fellow at the Center for Engineering Education and Outreach from 2005 to 2010. He holds a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Alfred University in 2002.
Carberry's research specializes in engineering education, including developing classroom innovations and assessment techniques for pre-college and higher education students, empirically understanding experiences of engineering students, educators, and practitioners, effective faculty mentorship, and the entrepreneurial mindset. Key publications include 'Situating intuition in engineering practice' in the Journal of Engineering Education (2023), 'Blended implementation of existing pre-college engineering programs: Teacher perspectives of program impact' in IEEE Transactions on Education (2024), 'Navigating pre-college engineering teaching during COVID-19' in Journal of Online Learning Research (2025), and 'Unlocking the secrets of intuition use' in International Journal of Engineering Education (2024). His impact is evidenced by major awards such as American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Fellow (2023), inaugural Richard Felder Award for Transformative Work in Engineering Education, ASEE Educational Research and Methods Division Apprentice Faculty Award (2011), Frontiers in Education New Faculty Award (2012), Top 5% Teaching Award from Fulton Schools of Engineering (2016), and Big Ten Academic Alliance Academic Leadership Program Fellow (2024-2025). He serves as Deputy Editor for the Journal of Engineering Education, co-maintains the Engineering Education Community Resource wiki, and previously chaired the Research in Engineering Education Network. Additional roles include Fulbright Specialist at École Nationale Supérieure des Mines in Rabat, Morocco (2019), and Director of THE 2 Lab at OSU.
