Dr. Adam Thompson serves as Professor of Athletic Training and Chair of the Division of Health and Human Performance in the School of Nursing and Health Professions at Indiana Wesleyan University, a position he has held since 2018 following a distinguished career progression at the institution since joining in 1999. Initially appointed as Assistant Athletic Trainer and Clinical Instructor from 1999 to 2002, he advanced to Head Athletic Trainer and Assistant Professor (2002-2004), then Director of the Athletic Training Program and Professor (2004-2019). Thompson earned his Bachelor of Arts in Athletic Training from Anderson University in 1996, Master of Science in Physical Education with a concentration in Athletic Training from Ohio University in 1997, and Doctor of Philosophy in Human Services specializing in Health Care Administration from Capella University in 2005. He provides clinical athletic training services to Indiana Wesleyan University intercollegiate athletes, including primary care for men's and women's cross country, tennis, and golf teams, and volunteers as an orthopedic healthcare provider at Bridges to Health, a free clinic in Marion, Indiana.
Thompson's academic interests center on chronic stress and burnout among healthcare professionals, attrition in athletic training, manual therapy clinical interventions, and sports medicine. His peer-reviewed publications include "Inhibitory Effect of the Kinesio Taping® Method on the Gastrocnemius Muscle" (American Journal of Sports Science and Medicine, 2016), "The Effects of Sensory Flow on The Autonomic Nervous System" (World Journal of Yoga, Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation, 2019), "Recurrence of Jones Fracture After Intramedullary Screw Fixation" (International Journal of Athletic Therapy & Training, 2013), and "From Diagnosis to Remission: A Five-Year Case Study of a Female Collegiate Athlete’s Battle with Leukemia" (International Journal of Tumor Therapy, 2012). A co-authored article received the 2015 Outstanding Advancing Educational Practice Manuscript award from the Athletic Training Education Journal. Since 2017, he has served as sports medicine contractor for USA Fencing, covering events such as World Cups, Grand Prix, Pan American Championships, and World Fencing Championships. Thompson is also a United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee sports medicine volunteer and was named President-Elect of the Indiana Athletic Trainers Association in 2020. He serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Sports Science and Medicine and has presented extensively at conferences including Great Lakes Athletic Trainers’ Association symposia on manual therapy, stress management, and interprofessional collaboration.
