Adrian Clark is an Associate Professor in the School of Product Design within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Canterbury. He obtained his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Canterbury at the Human Interface Technology Laboratory New Zealand (HIT Lab NZ). Prior to his current role, he worked for nearly a decade as a game developer in the gaming industry before returning to the University of Canterbury as a lecturer in Digital Screen Arts, progressing to his present position. Clark also serves as Director of Online and Continuing Education, contributing to innovative educational delivery.
His research focuses on human-computer interaction, augmented reality, virtual reality, immersive technologies, game design, perception AI, and computer vision. Key publications include 'A Survey of Augmented Reality' (2014, co-authored with Mark Billinghurst and Gun Lee, cited over 2,300 times), 'User-Defined Gestures for Augmented Reality' (2013, with Thammathip Piumsomboon and Mark Billinghurst, cited over 500 times), 'Physically-based Natural Hand and Tangible AR Interaction' (various contributions), and 'Editorial: Immersive Technologies in Healthcare' (2022). With nearly 2,900 citations across 59 publications on ResearchGate and a strong presence on Google Scholar, his work has impacted advancements in AR and immersive systems. Clark has received the University of Canterbury Innovation Jumpstart award, the Faculty of Engineering Lecturer of the Year, and multiple teaching excellence awards, including his third such honor. He teaches game design and development, supervises PhD students, and has presented public lectures, such as UC Connect on AI in the entertainment industries.
