Professor Ahmed Fahal serves as Professor and Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies at Dubai Medical College for Girls. He holds the position of Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Khartoum and Consultant Surgeon at Soba University Hospital. His academic journey began with an MBBS from the University of Khartoum in 1979, followed by an MS in 1984 and an MD in 1996, all awarded with Distinction. He further obtained fellowships including FRCSI from Dublin, Ireland; FRCP and FRCS from London, UK; FRCS(Glas) from Glasgow, UK; and FRCPath from the UK. Fahal's career progression at the University of Khartoum includes roles as Teaching Assistant (1981-1984), Lecturer and Senior Surgical Registrar (1984-1986), Assistant Professor (1984-1990), Associate Professor (1990-1997), and full Professor since 1997. He completed specialist training as Rotating Registrar in Sudan (1981-1984) and the UK (1986-1988), and has been a Consultant Surgeon since 1988, primarily at Soba University Hospital since 1992. Within the field of Medicine, his expertise as Professor of Surgery encompasses general surgery with special interests in gastrointestinal, tropical, endocrine surgery, and medical education.
Fahal's research specializations center on mycetoma, a neglected tropical disease, alongside clinical trials and quality in higher education. He directs the Mycetoma Research Centre at the University of Khartoum. Key publications include 'Mycetoma' in the British Journal of Surgery (1992), 'Mycetoma thorn on the flesh' in Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (2004), and 'A New Model for Management of Mycetoma in the Sudan' in PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases (2014), contributing to over 13,000 citations on Google Scholar. He holds editorial roles on boards such as Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases and Khartoum Medical Journal, and serves on committees including the WHO NTD Diagnostic Technical Advisory Group and as former President of Sudan's Scientific Research and Innovation Agency (2014-2022). Fahal delivers public lectures on surgery, health education, and mycetoma across Sudan.
