Zobaida Ahmed Piu is a PhD candidate at the Centre for the Health Economy (MUCHE) within the Macquarie Business School's Department of Economics at Macquarie University. She holds a Master in Health Economics from the University of Dhaka and completed a Master of Research degree at Macquarie University in 2021. Her Master of Research thesis, titled "Understanding HIV/AIDS knowledge deprivation among Bangladeshi women: A multidimensional approach," was supervised by Professor Elisabetta Magnani and Associate Professor Kompal Sinha. Piu's research specializations center on health economics, with a strong focus on women's health issues. Her work explores HIV/AIDS knowledge deprivation, women's agency in health decision-making, access to reproductive health services such as oral contraceptive pills, and the quality-of-life impacts of conditions like hearing loss. Previously associated with the Institute of Health Economics at the University of Dhaka, she has transitioned her expertise to both developing and developed country contexts through her doctoral studies.
Piu has published several impactful papers demonstrating her contributions to the field. Notable among them is her co-authorship on "Women’s agency and HIV/AIDS knowledge deprivation: An analysis of married women in Bangladesh," published in Feminist Economics in 2024, which analyzes the interplay between agency and knowledge gaps using Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey data. She served as lead author on "A qualitative exploration of the over-the-counter availability of oral contraceptive pills in Australia," published in PLOS ONE in 2024, revealing consumer preferences and policy implications for reclassifying oral contraceptives. Additional contributions include co-authoring "Impact of hearing loss on quality of life: a qualitative study," presented at the Emerging Health Policy and Economics Research Conference in 2024. Earlier publications cover determinants of health care utilization among aged people in Bangladesh and women empowerment's role in maternal healthcare service utilization, both from 2020. Piu has presented her work on contraceptive access at seminars and recruited participants for related studies via university channels, underscoring her active engagement in health policy research.
