Dr. Alan Fenn-Lavington is an Adjunct Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Southern Cross University, located on the Gold Coast and Lismore campuses. With qualifications comprising a Diploma of Teaching (DipT) from Northern Rivers College of Advanced Education (NRCAE), a Master of Education (MEdu) from Griffith University, and a Doctor of Education (EdD) from Griffith University, he possesses over 30 years of extensive experience in the education sector. This includes primary and secondary teaching positions, as well as leadership roles such as Sport Coordinator, School Coordinator, and Acting Deputy Principal. He has also served as a lecturer in the School of Education at Griffith University.
Since joining Southern Cross University in 2006, Dr. Fenn-Lavington has taught across various programs in the School of Education, the Preparing for Success Program (PSP), Social Science, Sport Management, and Surfing Studies. As part of the PSP Teaching Team, he contributed to efforts that earned the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence and Achievement for the 2014/15 program, accompanied by a National Citation. His doctoral research employs Activity Theory, building on Engeström’s development from Vygotsky’s foundational work, to examine student engagement and retention in university settings. Dr. Fenn-Lavington’s research specializations center on students’ learning capabilities and academic success facilitated through online, on-campus, and blended learning approaches. He has a robust recent research portfolio, featuring accepted presentations and publications at conferences hosted by James Cook University in Townsville, Queensland; Flinders University in South Australia; the ICERI Conference in Seville, Spain; the APIAR Research Conference in Indonesia; and Oxford University in August 2022. Furthermore, he is a member of the International Advisory Board of Education, Research and Innovation in Seville, Spain, and integrates the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) Classroom Management principles introduced in 2024 into his educational practice.
