Professor Alan Thompson is the Garfield Weston Professor of Clinical Neurology & Neurorehabilitation in the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, Faculty of Brain Sciences at University College London. He holds the positions of Dean of the Faculty of Brain Sciences and Pro-Provost (London). An NIHR Emeritus Senior Investigator and Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences since 2015, he is also an honorary consultant neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square. Previously, he served as Clinical Director of the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery from 2003 to 2007 and Chair of the Neuroscience Academic Medical Centre for UCLPartners from 2014 to 2020. He has been Editor-in-Chief of the Multiple Sclerosis Journal.
Alan Thompson received his MB BCh BAO BA in 1979 and MD in 1985 from Trinity College Dublin. He trained in neurology at St Vincent’s and Adelaide Hospitals in Dublin, earning his MD under Professor Michael Hutchinson, followed by specialist training in neurology and neurorehabilitation at Queen Square’s National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. His research focuses on the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of progressive multiple sclerosis and neurorehabilitation. He has published extensively in high-impact journals, including "Multiple sclerosis" in The Lancet (2018), with an h-index of 133 on Google Scholar, demonstrating profound impact on the field. Thompson has delivered key contributions through committee roles, public lectures, and editorial work, advancing MS research and clinical practice globally. His achievements are recognized by major awards: Charcot Award (2021), John Dystel Prize for Multiple Sclerosis Research (2017), Lifetime Achievement Award from the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers (2018), and Sobek Prize (2020).
