Dr. Aleksa Bijelovic serves as Senior Lecturer, Associate Head of School, and Co-Director of Research in the School of Design and the Built Environment at Curtin University, within the Faculty of Humanities. He earned his Doctor of Liberal Arts in Architecture (Summa Cum Laude) from the Marcel Breuer Doctoral School at the University of Pécs, Hungary, in 2016. His academic and professional trajectory combines education and design practice, with a focus on theory construction through non-traditional research and creative efforts. Bijelovic explores liberatory perspectives and innovative modes of production in tertiary education, contributing to design culture, social context, and practice-based methodologies in architecture and the built environment.
Bijelovic's scholarly output includes peer-reviewed publications such as 'To Plurality and Synthesis — Tradition, Objects, and Body: An Anthropological Design Didactic Principle' (2024, On Architecture proceedings), 'Visual Thinking: A Methodological Approach to Age-Inclusive Housing Research' (2025), 'The Architecture of Fluidity: Visualization of the Research Process of Figurative and Nonfigurative Instrumentalisation of the Fluidity Phenomenon in Architecture' (2023), 'NOT LIVING IN CAVES' (2021, SAJ journal), and 'CUSTOM, CUSTOM-, CUSTOMIZE' (2020, STRAND proceedings). He serves on the journal board of Design and Planning Research, specializing in interior architecture, design culture and social context, and design practice and methods. Recognized with a win in the 3C Awards for Interior Design - Houses (Baar, Switzerland), Bijelovic has supervised research students since 2020 and tutored students who received accolades, including Elena-Dea Burger as WA Graduate of the Year 2023 in Bachelor of Applied Science (Interior Architecture). He co-curated the 'Stitch as Code' exhibition (2024, part of IOTA24 Festival) and convenes international panels, such as Adaptive Speculative Design for OA2026 and contributions to STRAND Sustainable Urban Society Association events. Through his independent practice Petokraka, he bridges academia and creative production.
