Dr Aleksandar Brkić is a Senior Lecturer and Director of the MA Arts Administration and Cultural Policy in the School of Creative Management at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he joined in 2016. He also directs the Centre for the Study of the Balkans and is affiliated with the Institute for Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship. A scholar in the fields of cultural and arts management, cultural policy, cultural entrepreneurship, and creative industries, Brkić holds a PhD in Management in Arts and Media from City, University of London. Before entering academia, he worked as a creative producer and cultural manager in Serbia and the United Kingdom, focusing on the intersections of performing arts, visual arts, and design. His practical experience informs his teaching and research, bridging theory and practice in arts management education.
Brkić has published extensively, influencing discourse in arts management and cultural policy. Key works include the highly cited article 'Teaching Arts Management: Where Did We Lose the Core Ideas?' (2009), which critiques methodological approaches in the discipline; 'Cultural policy frameworks (Re)constructing national and supranational identities: The Balkans and the European Union' (2013); and 'Produkcija umjetničkih događaja: Početni priručnik za buduće producente/ice' (2021, with Ana Letunić). He co-edited 'The Routledge Companion to Arts Management' (2018 and 2019 editions) and serves as Series Editor for Routledge Focus on the Global Creative Economy. Recent publications feature 'Roles of Cultural Networks in the Times of Quantum Reality' (2019), 'Death of the Arts Manager' (2018), 'Balancing between the notions of quality and attraction in teaching arts management' (2019), 'Questioning the Timing of Student Evaluations: BA Arts Management Modules' (2022), 'A view from the Goldsmiths Bridge. Challenges for higher education in the arts, culture and creativity in post-Brexit UK' (2024), and 'Caring for Cultural Heritage: An Integrated Approach to Legal and Ethical Initiatives in the United Kingdom' (2024). In 2011, he received the Cultural Policy Research Award from the European Cultural Foundation. Brkić has contributed to international initiatives, including educational programmes for Rijeka 2020 European Capital of Culture, the 'Culture Means Business' workshop in Cyprus, and conferences on cultural policies.
