About Ali

Dr Ali Kermanizadeh is a hepatic toxicologist with a strong background in immunology. He completed his PhD in Toxicology at Heriot-Watt University in 2013, along with an MRes in Immunology and a BSc (Hons) in Immunology. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Prior to his current role at the University of Derby, he held positions at the University of Copenhagen, Heriot-Watt University, the French Institute of Health and Medical Research, and Unilever.

At the University of Derby, Dr Kermanizadeh serves as Senior Lecturer in Clinical Biochemistry and Toxicology within the College of Science and Engineering and acts as REF co-lead for Unit of Assessment 3. His teaching covers modules in the Biomedical Science and Human Biology programmes, where he leads the modules Chemistry of Life and Applied Immunology. His research focuses on advanced cell culture and new approach methodologies for toxicity testing, the health effects of micro and nano plastics, hazards associated with e-cigarettes, the role of the gut microbiome in liver disease and type 2 diabetes, and the design of lipid and protein-based nanomedicines. He is a member of the British Toxicology Society and is a European registered toxicologist. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health – Part B, Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, Biochemistry Research International, and Discover Toxicology. He has authored 61 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 9 book chapters.
