Professor Tristram Hooley is Professor of Career Education at the University of Derby, where he contributes to the International Centre for Guidance Studies. He holds Visiting Professor positions at the Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences and Canterbury Christ Church University. Hooley serves as Chief Editor of the Journal of the National Institute for Career Education and Counselling and is a member of the Board of the International Centre for Career Development and Public Policy. He acted as specialist adviser to the House of Commons Education Committee inquiry into career guidance and has collaborated with various governments worldwide on career guidance policy. A Winston Churchill Fellow, he is also a director of the National Institute for Career Education and Counselling and Chair of Adviza. Hooley teaches on the Masters in Career Education and Development programme and supervises EdD and PhD theses in areas such as career development, education policy, technology, and social justice. He has supervised numerous doctoral students on topics including career decision-making among arts students, employer engagement in higher education, and platform work among young people. Additionally, he has examined 17 doctoral theses across the UK, Australia, Canada, Denmark, and Malaysia.
Hooley's research specializations include the role of career guidance in promoting social justice, the intersection of policy and practice in career work, the impact of career development interventions, and the role of online and digital technologies in education and career guidance. He is currently involved in projects with the OECD on career guidance and social inequalities, with the International Labour Organisation on career frameworks for low- and middle-income countries, and with the Institute for Student Employers on recruitment practices. His extensive publication record features books such as The Career Development Handbook (2024, with R. Alexander and G. Frigerio), The Oxford Handbook of Career Development (2021, edited with P. Robertson and P. McCash), Career Guidance for Social Justice: Contesting Neoliberalism (2018, with R. Sultana and R. Thomsen), and You're Hired! The Graduate Career Handbook (2017, with K. Grant). Recent articles include 'How can and should secondary school teachers be involved in building students’ career knowledge and skills?' (2025, with S. Rice) in Journal of Education and Work and 'Career and sustainability' (2024) in Journal of the National Institute for Career Education and Counselling. Hooley maintains the Adventures in Career Development blog and is a member of the Career Development Institute.
