Amy McMillan is a Professor of Management and Associate Dean for Research and Regional Transformation in the College of Business at East Carolina University. She joined ECU in 2003 as an Assistant Professor, advanced to Associate Professor in 2009, and was promoted to Full Professor in 2019. Previously, she served as Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Brownsville from 2001 to 2003 and as a Teaching Assistant at Louisiana Tech University from 1998 to 2001. Before entering academia, McMillan worked as a National Corporate Instructor at SkyTel, a telecommunications company, from 1993 to 1998, where she developed training materials, conducted seven-week training programs, and evaluated new employees. She also taught English as a Second Language at Instituto InterAmericano in Veracruz, Mexico, from 1991 to 1992. Her academic credentials include a D.B.A. in Management from Louisiana Tech University (2003), an M.B.A. in Business Administration from Mississippi College (1997), and a B.A. in Communicative Disorders from San Diego State University (1989).
McMillan's research specializes in diversity, organizational climate, and corporate social responsibility. She has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, including 'Employing an innovation strategy in racially diverse workforces: Effects on firm performance' (Group & Organization Management, 2003), 'Establishing a diversity program is not enough: Exploring the determinants of diversity climate' (Journal of Business & Psychology, 2010), 'Antecedents and consequences of psychological contracts: Does organizational culture really matter?' (Journal of Business Research, 2009), 'Does CEO transformational leadership influence top executive normative commitment?' (Journal of Business Research, 2014), and 'Drivers of selectivity in family firms: Understanding the impact of age and ownership on CSR' (Journal of Family Business Strategy, 2020). Her work has been cited over 2,293 times according to Google Scholar. McMillan has received several honors, such as the Treasured Pirate award from ECU (2024), Best Paper Award at the Small Business Institute Conference (2021), Distinguished Paper Award from the Small Business Institute (2019), College of Business Faculty Fellow (2017), and Best Empirical Paper Award from the Small Business Institute (2018). She has contributed to curriculum development, including redesigning courses like Business & Society into Leadership in Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility, creating a Graduate Certificate in Leadership, and serving as an online teaching mentor.
