Anabel Lanterna is an Assistant Professor in the School of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, at The University of Nottingham. Born in Laguna Larga, Córdoba, Argentina, she obtained her BSc in Chemistry from the National University of Córdoba in 2007 and subsequently worked in the R&D division of Genbra Argentina S.A. in the field of agricultural sciences. In 2008, she was awarded a prestigious PhD fellowship from CONICET to pursue graduate studies, completing her PhD in Chemistry with Honours from the National University of Córdoba in 2013. Her doctoral research included stints at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa and the University of Valencia in Spain. Following her PhD, Lanterna held short-term postdoctoral positions at Rhodes University in South Africa and the National University of Córdoba, developing new coated magnetic particles in Langmuir monolayer model membranes. From the end of 2013 to 2017, she served as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Ottawa under the supervision of Professor Juan C. Scaiano, where she pioneered work in heterogeneous photocatalysis. She continued at Ottawa as a Research Associate from 2017 to 2020, managing a research group. In 2020, she joined The University of Nottingham as an Assistant Professor and earned a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education from the same institution in 2021.
The Lanterna Research Group specializes in the rational design of heterogeneous photocatalysts based on earth-abundant, inexpensive, and stable materials, bridging fundamental insights into structure-activity relationships with applications for large-scale sustainable processes such as water purification and green hydrogen generation. Her contributions to sustainable chemistry, photochemistry, and materials science have been honored with the Inter-American Photochemical Society Gerhard Closs Postdoctoral Award in 2017, recognition from the Chemical Institute of Canada in 2018, and the Royal Society of Chemistry Environment, Sustainability and Energy Division Early Career Award in 2022. Notable publications include 'Mechanistic Insights on the Semihydrogenation of Alkynes over Different Nanostructured Photocatalysts' in ACS Catalysis (2021), 'A green road map for heterogeneous photocatalysis' in Pure and Applied Chemistry (2020), and 'Evaluation of different Ni–semiconductor composites as electrodes for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction' in Sustainable Energy & Fuels (2020). Lanterna teaches advanced materials chemistry modules and supervises projects on photocatalysis and related topics.
