About Anastasios

Anastasios Panagiotelis served as Associate Professor of Business Analytics in the Discipline of Business Analytics at the University of Sydney Business School from September 2020 to March 2025. In this role, he took on significant leadership responsibilities, including Acting Head of the Discipline from July 2024 to January 2025, Deputy Head from July 2023 to June 2024, and Postgraduate Coordinator from January 2022 to June 2023. A University of Sydney alumnus, he obtained his PhD in 2009 and Bachelor of Economics (Honours) in 2004, earning the University Medal for exceptional academic performance. Earlier in his career, he held casual teaching positions at the University of Sydney from 2003 to 2009 while completing his studies. Following his PhD, Panagiotelis was an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Researcher at the Chair of Mathematical Statistics, Technische Universität München from 2009 to 2011. He then joined Monash University, progressing from Lecturer (2011-2014) to Senior Lecturer (2015-2018) and Associate Professor (2019-2020) in the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics before returning to Sydney.

Panagiotelis's research focuses on forecast reconciliation, Bayesian forecasting, hierarchical time series, copula models, macroeconomic forecasting, data analytics, time series analysis, survey data analysis, high-dimensional data analysis, and visual data analytics. His influential publications include "Forecast reconciliation: A review" (Athanasopoulos, Hyndman, Kourentzes, & Panagiotelis, 2024, International Journal of Forecasting), "Probabilistic forecast reconciliation: Properties, evaluation and score optimisation" (Panagiotelis, Gamakumara, Athanasopoulos, & Hyndman, 2023, European Journal of Operational Research), "Boosting domain-specific models with shrinkage: an application in mortality forecasting" (Li, Li, & Panagiotelis, 2025, International Journal of Forecasting), "Macroeconomic forecasting for Australia using a large number of predictors" (Panagiotelis et al., 2019, International Journal of Forecasting), and "Pair copula constructions for multivariate discrete data" (Panagiotelis, Czado, & Joe, 2012, Journal of the American Statistical Association). He has been recognized as one of Australia's top 250 researchers in 2025 by Australian Research magazine in the field of Business, Economics & Management. Additional honors include the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence at Monash University in 2018, along with various teaching award nominations at Monash and Sydney.
