About Andrew

Andrew G. Alleyne is the Ralph and Catherine V. Fisher Professor in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received a B.S.E. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University in 1989, followed by an M.S.E. in 1992 and a Ph.D. in 1994 in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to joining UIUC, Alleyne served as Research Staff at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 1989 to 1994. He joined the UIUC faculty in 1994 as an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Science and Engineering. He advanced to Associate Professor in 2000 and Professor in 2004, while also affiliating with the Coordinated Science Laboratory. Notable administrative roles include Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering from 2008 to 2012, Associate Head for Undergraduate Programs from 2014 to 2015, and Director of the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Power Optimization of Electro-Thermal Systems (POETS) from 2015 to 2022.

Alleyne's research specializes in control theory and its applications, balancing theoretical developments with practical implementations across diverse domains. Key areas include Iterative Learning Control for precision motion control, dynamic modeling and control of transient thermal systems, applications in advanced manufacturing such as electro-hydrodynamic jet printing, and thermal management for power electronics in electrified mobility and mobile systems. His contributions are documented in influential publications, including the chapter 'Iterative Learning Control' in the Control Handbook, 2nd Edition (CRC Press, 2010), 'Multi-Zone Temperature Modeling and Control' in Intelligent Building Control Systems (Springer, 2018), and 'Control as an Enabler for Electrified Mobility' in the Annual Review of Control, Robotics, and Autonomous Systems (2022). Alleyne has received numerous prestigious awards and honors, including election to the National Academy of Engineering in 2023, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2019, IEEE Fellow in 2017, ASME Fellow in 2005, ASME Charles Stark Draper Innovative Practice Award in 2016, ASME Robert Henry Thurston Lecture Award in 2020, and the Chief of Staff of the Air Force Exceptional Public Service Award in 2020. He has served on the U.S. Air Force Scientific Advisory Board from 2009 to 2013 and 2016 to 2020, and the National Academies Board on Army Research and Development from 2018 to 2021.
