Andrew Civitello, M.D., F.A.C.C., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Section of Cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine. He holds the positions of Medical Director of the Heart Transplant Program at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, Co-Director of the Advanced Heart Failure Center of Excellence, and Director of the Advanced Heart Failure Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Civitello earned his M.D. from the University of Texas Health Science Center in 1995. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine, including a year as Chief Medical Resident, at the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston from 1998 to 1999. He then completed fellowships in General Cardiology in 2002 and Interventional Cardiology in 2003 at Baylor College of Medicine. He is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Interventional Cardiology, and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology.
Dr. Civitello treats patients across the spectrum of heart failure, with particular clinical and research interests in novel therapies, mechanical circulatory support, and heart transplantation. His contributions to the field include numerous peer-reviewed publications in major journals. Notable works co-authored by him include "The influence of preoperative dialysis on survival after continuous-flow left ventricular assist device implantation" published in Interactive CardioVascular and Thoracic Surgery in 2022, "Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation as a bridge to durable left ventricular assist device implantation in INTERMACS-1 patients" in Journal of Artificial Organs in 2022, "Continuous-Flow Left Ventricular Assist Device Explantation After More Than 5 Years of Circulatory Support and Ventricular Reconditioning" in Texas Heart Institute Journal in 2021, and "Continuous-Flow Left Ventricular Assist Device Support in Patients with Ischemic Versus Nonischemic Cardiomyopathy" in Texas Heart Institute Journal in 2021. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and has presented at national and international professional forums. Dr. Civitello specializes in general cardiology, interventional cardiology, advanced heart failure, heart transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, and novel treatments for heart failure within the Medicine faculty at Baylor College of Medicine.
