Professor Andrew Day, MB ChB, MD, FRACP, AGAF, is the Cure Kids Chair of Paediatric Research and Head of the Department of Paediatrics, University of Otago, Christchurch, within the Faculty of Medicine. As a paediatric gastroenterologist at Christchurch Hospital, he leads research and clinical efforts in child health. Day completed his medical degree at the University of Otago, followed by paediatric training in Christchurch, New Zealand. He pursued advanced clinical and research fellowship training at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. In 2000, he joined the University of New South Wales and Sydney Children’s Hospital in Australia. Returning to New Zealand in 2009, he assumed an academic position at the University of Otago, Christchurch, and his clinical role at Christchurch Hospital. He served as Head of Department from 2010 to 2020 and was appointed to the prestigious Cure Kids Chair in 2017. Additionally, he holds the position of Deputy Editor-in-Chief for Translational Pediatrics.
Professor Day's research specializations encompass paediatric gastroenterology, with a primary focus on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), coeliac disease, and strategies to improve outcomes in Crohn’s disease, including nutritional therapies. His investigations explore host-pathogen interactions in the gut, intestinal inflammatory biomarkers, and the nutritional management of gastrointestinal disorders. With over 220 peer-reviewed publications, his contributions include “Factors associated with loss of fecal biomarker accuracy during routine assessment of inflammatory bowel disease” (Kendall et al., 2026, JGH Open), “Unique challenges faced by tweens and teens with inflammatory bowel disease: a global perspective” (Geiculescu et al., 2026, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases), “The emerging roles of intestinal organoid models in inflammatory bowel disease research” (Leach et al., 2026, Expert Review of Gastroenterology & Hepatology), and “Development and validation of a tool to assess disease-related knowledge in children with coeliac disease” (Hall et al., 2026, Journal of Clinical Medicine). Professor Day has received recognition such as the Editor of Distinction Award from the Journal of Clinical Medicine. His extensive collaborations have advanced clinical practices in paediatric gut health.
