Andrew Hawley is the Program Coordinator and Senior Instructor in the Tourism, Recreation, and Adventure Leadership program within the College of Forestry at Oregon State University-Cascades. In this capacity, he teaches technical-based courses emphasizing outdoor recreation and adventure leadership skills. His passion for the outdoors began with family camping and canoeing trips in the Midwest and Canada, shaping a career dedicated to sharing these experiences through education. Hawley joined Oregon State University-Cascades to contribute to the TRAL program, fostering skills among students, colleagues, and the broader community in Bend, Oregon.
Prior to his current role, Hawley amassed over 15 years of instructing in outdoor education across domestic and international settings. He operated a river company in Guatemala and served as an instructor for the Costa Rica Rainforest Outward Bound School. Hawley guided mountain and river expeditions spanning four continents and coordinated a nationally recognized outdoor program at Appalachian State University, where he also taught specialized classes in mountaineering and whitewater rafting. His early academic involvement included serving as an undergraduate teaching assistant at North Carolina State University, followed by graduate school at Ohio University. Hawley holds an extensive array of professional certifications, including those from the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA), American Canoe Association (ACA), Professional Paddlesports Instructors (PNA), American Alpine Club (AAC), International Rafting Federation (IRF), Rescue 3 International, National Registry of Emergency Medical Services (NREMS), North Carolina Emergency Medical Services (NCEMS), and Wilderness Medical Institute (WMI). At Oregon State University, he leads study abroad opportunities such as the Parks and Protected Areas of Patagonia course and serves as a co-investigator on a study utilizing edge-of-cliff data to develop training programs for climbers. Additionally, Hawley participates in the College Curriculum Committees, supporting program development in Forestry.
