Andrew Simpson serves as Lecturer (teaching focused) in Primary English/Literacy education at the University of New England, affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences and Education and the School of Education. He holds a Bachelor of Education with First Class Honours. Simpson has dedicated over 22 years to lecturing in English and Literacies at UNE. Before joining the university, he taught primary school students in Years 2 through 6 on the New South Wales north coast. He also instructed secondary students in Years 7 to 11 at the BackTrack school in Armidale, New South Wales. Furthermore, Simpson has engaged in international education initiatives, collaborating with teachers, university students, and school students in the Pacific nations of Tuvalu and Nauru. His extensive classroom experience informs his academic teaching, bridging practical pedagogy with higher education instruction in literacy and English language development.
In his role, Simpson coordinates key units including Primary English 2: Language, Literature, Literacy (EDEE329) and English in the Primary Years 2: Focus on Early Reading (EDEE352), emphasizing foundational skills in language, literature, and literacy for future educators. His contributions to the field include co-authored chapters in the edited volume New Literacies and the English Curriculum: Multimodal Perspectives by Len Unsworth (Continuum, 2009): 'Savvy Sambo: Appraising an Icon' with Corinne Buckland, which critically examines cultural icons in literacy contexts, and 'Secondary School examinations and attitude: Utilising Appraisal to interpret values in image/text relations' with Debbie Baxter, exploring multimodal analysis in educational assessments. Simpson received the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association award in 1998 for his contributions to literacy education. He maintains active memberships in the Primary English Teaching Association and the Australian Literacy Educators Association, supporting professional development in English education.
