Professor Andrew Tawse-Smith serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Oral Sciences in the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Otago. He holds additional roles as Associate Dean (International) for the Faculty of Dentistry and Student Affairs Officer. His academic qualifications include DDS, Certificate in Periodontology, and PhD. Tawse-Smith's research platform is centered on clinical research in oral implantology, periodontology, and dental education. He has led prospective evaluations of patients rehabilitated with oral implants, measuring peri-implant parameters to assess implant success and survival rates, health of peri-implant tissues, and patient satisfaction over more than ten years. Current investigations focus on biological implant complications, implant surface deterioration, and the clinical implications of titanium particles in peri-implant tissues. In dental education, he collaborates with an international team of academics from Europe, North America, South America, and Asia to design and develop novel digital e-learning tools for dental and oral health students. As part of the University of Otago–International Medical University BDS partnership, he has evaluated the transition of IMU students into the University of Otago dental curriculum. He supervises postgraduate students in Periodontics and Dental Implantology.
Tawse-Smith's clinical expertise encompasses periodontics, oral implantology, and dental education. Key publications include 'Impact of open proximal contacts on peri-implant diseases: A systematic review and meta-analysis' (2026, Clinical & Experimental Dental Research), 'Diagnostic accuracy of deep learning models in detecting peri-implant marginal bone loss: A systematic review and meta-analysis' (2026, Clinical Oral Implants Research), 'Diagnostic accuracy of artificial intelligence-based deep learning models in detecting furcation involvement: A systematic review and meta-analysis' (2025, Journal of Periodontology), 'Peri-implantitis and survival outcomes of tissue level versus bone level dental implants: A systematic review and meta-analysis' (2025, Clinical & Experimental Dental Research), and 'Interactive e-learning lessons in patient-centred interview: An international multi-centred collaboration project' (2026, IIUM Journal of Orofacial & Health Sciences). He delivered his Inaugural Professorial Lecture on these topics in 2023.
