Dr. Angus Barber holds an academic appointment at Curtin Medical School within the Faculty of Health Sciences at Curtin University. He completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) as a member of the inaugural cohort of Curtin University Medical School graduates in 2021. For his outstanding performance, he received the AMA Gold Medal for dux of medicine and the Dean’s Prize for excellence. Currently, Barber is pursuing a Master of Philosophy at the University of Western Australia, supervised by Professor Fiona Wood.
Barber’s clinical career includes an internship at Royal Perth Hospital in 2022, followed by selection in 2023 for residency in the Basic Surgical Programme at the same hospital, where he serves as a Service Registrar. His research specialization lies in advancing burn care through the integration of Rapid Evaporative Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (REIMS) technology in burns surgery, aiming to improve debridement precision and patient recovery outcomes in partnership with the Fiona Wood Foundation. He has co-authored the systematic review 'Delirium in hospitalised adults with acute burns' (May 2022) with researchers from Fiona Stanley Hospital, the Burns Service of Western Australia, and Curtin University. Barber has registered PROSPERO protocols for systematic reviews on delirium risk factors in acute burns patients and REIMS applications in surgical pathology. His contributions to the field are recognized through awards including the 2023-2024 Cynthia Banham Burn Injury Research Fellowship from the Fiona Wood Foundation, the inaugural 2024 FPA Australia Scholarship, and the AMA (WA) Hippo Award as joint dux. Barber serves as an executive committee member of the Australasian Clinical Trials in Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (ACTPRAS).
