Dr. Anita Staneva is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics at Griffith Business School, Griffith University. Described as an applied health economist, she specializes in large database health evaluations and individuals' behaviour. Her research interests include applied micro-economics; applied health economics, particularly environmental disaster shocks and health outcomes, negative external shocks such as pollution on health; mental health and psychological distress; ageing population and dementia; labour and development economics; social and economic disadvantage; and early childhood development. She also investigates households, behaviour, and wellbeing, with ongoing projects on retirement wealth and risk-taking in collaboration with Professor Robert Bianchi. Dr. Staneva is a member of the Griffith Centre for Personal Finance and Superannuation and an affiliate of the Life Course Centre.
Prior to her appointment at Griffith University around 2020, Dr. Staneva held a Research Fellow position at the University of Sydney from 2016 to 2019. Her scholarly contributions are evidenced by publications in leading journals. Notable works include 'Personality, gender, and age resilience to the mental health effects of COVID-19' (Social Science & Medicine, 2022), 'The effect of bereavement on cognitive functioning among older adults' (2020), 'Adolescent School Bullying Victimization and Later Life Outcomes' (2021), 'Migrant well-being in Australia: Does locus of control matter?' (2025), 'Child development impact of water scarcity: Evidence from rural Ethiopia' (2021), and 'The bilingual gap in children's language, emotional and pro-social development' (IZA Journal of Labor Economics, 2021). She teaches Microeconomic Analysis (2314AFE) as convenor and supervises PhD students, including on topics such as obesity-based wage discrimination. Dr. Staneva maintains an active Google Scholar profile focused on applied labour and health economics, with her email publicly listed for professional correspondence.
