Professor Ann Bonner is the Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Griffith University, a position she has held since 2020. She is also an Honorary Research Fellow at the Kidney Health Service, Metro North Health, where she leads the Kidney Nursing Collaborative Research Centre, and a Visiting Scholar at Princess Alexandra and Logan Hospitals. Holding a PhD, MA, BAppSc(Nurs), and credentials as RN and MACN, Professor Bonner began her nursing career at Westmead Hospital in Sydney. From a disadvantaged background, she completed her Bachelor, Masters, and PhD through part-time studies while working full-time. Prior to Griffith, she was Head of Department at Queensland University of Technology's Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation from 2011. Under her leadership, the School of Nursing and Midwifery operates across the Gold Coast, Logan, and Nathan campuses, advancing nursing education and research.
Over a 30-year research career, Professor Bonner has focused on improving outcomes for individuals with chronic kidney disease along its trajectory, from slowing progression to kidney replacement therapies and end-of-life care. Her interests encompass symptom management, self-management, health literacy, and advanced practice nursing roles. As chief investigator in the National Health and Medical Research Council’s Chronic Kidney Disease Centre of Research Excellence, she has attracted more than AUD 7 million in competitive funding. She has authored over 150 publications, including 'Multimodal Strategies for Improving Health Literacy in Adults with Chronic Kidney Disease' (2026), 'Patient-Reported Outcome Measures to Determine Sleep Problems in Adults With Chronic Kidney Disease: A Systematic Review' (2025), 'Beyond the Individual: Toward a Family-Centered Understanding of Dialysis Caregiving' (2026), and 'Advance Care Planning Interventions for Adults With Chronic Kidney Disease: A Systematic Review' (2026), with more than 15,000 citations on Google Scholar. Professor Bonner has delivered over 200 peer-reviewed conference presentations and invited papers. An internationally recognized nephrology nurse researcher, she serves on the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Chronic Kidney Disease Expert Advisory Group and the External Advisory Board for the Australian Kidney Trials Network. She is a life-member of the Renal Society of Australasia and was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International's International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame in 2021.
