Anne Andrews is Professor-in-Residence of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine, Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Professor of Bioengineering. She holds the Shirley M. Hatos Endowed Chair in Clinical Neuropharmacology and serves as Senior Research Scientist at the Hatos Center for Neuropharmacology. Andrews earned her B.S. in Chemistry from Pennsylvania State University and Ph.D. in Chemistry from American University as a U.S. Department of Education Fellow while at the National Institute of Mental Health, followed by postdoctoral training and a senior staff fellowship there. Her career includes faculty positions at Pennsylvania State University and leadership roles in interdisciplinary programs at UCLA, including the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, Brain Research Institute, and California NanoSystems Institute.
Andrews directs basic and translational research on anxiety, depression, and addiction at the nexus of nanoscience and neuroscience, elucidating how the serotonin system, especially the serotonin transporter, influences neurotransmission underlying anxiety, mood, stress responsiveness, learning, and memory. Her team integrates neuroscientists, biologists, chemists, and engineers to study genetic and pharmacologic mouse models, human genetic variants, key proteins like brain-derived neurotrophic factor, voltammetry, microdialysis, and nanomaterials for in vivo nanobiosensors and proteomics. Pioneering techniques include chemical lift-off lithography and aptamer-field-effect transistors. Select publications encompass "Aptamer-field-effect transistors overcome Debye length limitations for small-molecule sensing" (Science, 2018), "Physiologically relevant changes in serotonin resolved by fast microdialysis" (ACS Chemical Neuroscience, 2013), "Subtractive patterning via chemical lift-off lithography" (Science, 2012), and "Safety in treatment: Classical pharmacotherapeutics and new avenues for addressing maternal depression and anxiety during pregnancy" (Pharmacology Reviews, 2025). Awards include NIH Fellows Award for Research Excellence, Eli Lilly Outstanding Young Analytical Chemist Award, American Parkinson’s Disease Association Research Award, Brain & Behavior Research Foundation Independent Investigator Award, NIH Director’s Transformative Research Award, California Neurotechnologies Research Award, and IUPAC Distinguished Women in Chemistry Award. She is an elected Fellow of the Collegium Internationale Neuropsychopharmacologicum, American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering; past President of the International Society for Serotonin Research; Serotonin Club councilor; and Associate Editor for ACS Chemical Neuroscience. Her advances in neurotransmitter sensing contributed to the U.S. BRAIN Initiative.
