Professor Anne Boyter serves as Professor of Learning & Teaching at the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences within the Faculty of Science at the University of Strathclyde. She earned her BSc (Hons) in Pharmacy from Heriot-Watt University in 1985, followed by an MSc in Clinical Pharmacy in 1993 and a PhD in 2004 from the University of Strathclyde, as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Economics from the University of Aberdeen. Before joining academia, she worked as a Senior Clinical Pharmacist at NHS Tayside, focusing on respiratory medicine and infectious diseases. In her current role, she acts as Programme Director for the MPharm degree and led the recent curriculum review for the programme.
Her research specializations include respiratory medicine, infection control, health evaluation, patient care linked to analytical and formulation sciences, effects of inhaled therapies, bacterial contamination in inhaler devices, and pharmacoepidemiology concerning disease progression. Additionally, she has contributed significantly to pharmacy education through research on experiential learning, novel assessments, preceptor roles, and e-learning tools like the SCRIPT programme used in undergraduate teaching. Anne Boyter delivers teaching in pharmaceutical microbiology and pharmacy practice related to respiratory diseases and infections across all four years of the MPharm and in the MSc Clinical Pharmacy. She holds the position of Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (FRPharmS, awarded 2024), serves on the Scottish Pharmacy Board of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, and is a member of the SIGN/BTS Asthma guideline steering group, co-chairing its pharmacology subgroup. With 83 research outputs, notable publications include "Pharmacists' views on barriers and enablers to the implementation of advanced pharmacist prescribing in Scotland: a qualitative study using Normalisation Process Theory" (International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy, 2026), "Designing a framework to support practice-based interprofessional education initiatives for student pharmacists: A modified Delphi study" (American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, 2026), "Exploring the applicability of the UK Prescribing Safety Assessment with early career pharmacists as preparation before formal prescribing training" (International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy, 2026), and "Knowledge gaps influencing inappropriate surgical antibiotic prophylaxis prescribing in Kuwait: qualitative study" (Research in Social and Administrative Pharmacy, 2025). She has led funded projects from NHS Education for Scotland to support pharmacy experiential learning development.
