About Anthony

Associate Professor Anthony Brown held the position of Associate Dean and Head of the School of Rural Health at the University of Sydney, operating from the Dubbo and Orange campuses within the Rural Clinical School. Possessing qualifications of MBBS, MPH, FAFPHM, and FAFOEM, he specialized as a public health physician, occupational physician, and environmental health physician. Brown dedicated over 30 years to rural and remote general practice before transitioning to academic leadership. He commenced his role at the School of Rural Health in early 2009, contributing to the development of educational programs for medical students in rural settings. His leadership extended to co-authoring 'A framework for effective clinical placements in rural and remote Australia' published in 2014, aimed at enhancing medical training outcomes in underserved areas.

Brown's research focused on pressing public health issues in rural Australia, including obesity prevalence and management, diabetes self-management interventions, infectious disease surveillance, and occupational health risks. Notable publications include 'Large and forgotten in rural Australia: assessment, attitudes and possible approaches to obesity in rural adults' (Australian Journal of Rural Health, 2014), 'Antibiotic use for Vibrio infections: important insights from surveillance data in Australia and the United States' (Epidemiology & Infection, 2015), 'Effectiveness of introducing point of care capillary testing and linking it to an automated lifestyle self-management intervention for patients with type 2 diabetes (SMART2D-PC)' (Rural and Remote Health, 2015), and contributions to studies on rural placements versus background in medical training (Medical Journal of Australia, 2013). He chaired the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (AFOEM) Advanced Training Committee and led sessions at the Australasian Society of Occupational Medicine (ANZSOM) annual scientific meetings in 2015 and 2016 on topics such as clinic audits in the oil and gas industry. Brown retired from the University of Sydney in 2022 after 13 years of service, leaving a lasting impact on rural health education and research.
