Anthony Chan is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Rice University, where his work in Space Science centers on theoretical space plasma physics. He earned a BS in 1981 and an MS in 1983 from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, followed by a PhD in 1991 from Princeton University. As a member of the Ken Kennedy Institute for Information Technology, Professor Chan's research investigates the acceleration and transport of radiation belt electrons, which are relativistic electrons trapped within Earth's magnetospheric fields. His studies encompass the theory and simulation of relativistic charged particle dynamics in electromagnetic fields, including motion through large-scale magnetospheric structures and turbulent wave fields. This research emphasizes fundamental plasma physics and space plasmas, aiming to elucidate acceleration mechanisms that threaten technological systems and human presence in space.

Professor Chan serves as Co-Investigator on the RBSP-ECT (Radiation Belt Storm Probes Energetic Particle, Composition, and Thermal Plasma) Instrument Team for NASA's Van Allen Probes twin spacecraft mission. He collaborates with Dr. Scot Elkington of the University of Colorado to develop K2, a comprehensive large-scale computational model simulating the dynamics of Earth's radiation belts, coordinated with observational data from the Van Allen Probes. His contributions advance understanding of space weather phenomena and radiation belt behavior. In recognition of his dedication to students, Professor Chan received the Outstanding Faculty Associate award from Martel College in 2012 for excellence in teaching, mentoring, and service. He has taught courses including PHYS 532 Classical Electrodynamics and PHYS 111 Mechanics. Professor Chan's long-standing career at Rice University underscores his impact on space plasma physics research and education.
