Professor Anthony J. Langlois is the inaugural Stan Perron Dean of Applied Ethics in the Faculty of Business & Law at Curtin University, appointed in October 2023 in partnership with the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation. He leads the Curtin Centre for Applied Ethics, which promotes research, education, and collaboration to develop ethical leadership addressing challenges like artificial intelligence, climate change, corporate responsibility, and social justice. Langlois earned a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours from the University of Tasmania and a PhD in Political Science and International Relations from the Australian National University. Over 25 years, he has been an influential educator and scholar on ethics and human rights. Previously, he served two decades at Flinders University as Associate Professor in International Relations, directing a transnational Master's program in International Relations and International Business jointly with Nankai University in China.
His research focuses on human rights and democracy, political philosophy, ethics, applied ethics, international relations theory, LGBTIQ rights, Southeast Asia, governance, and international security. Langlois authored The Politics of Justice and Human Rights: Southeast Asia and Universalist Theory (Cambridge University Press, 2001) and Sexuality and Gender Diversity Rights in Southeast Asia (Cambridge University Press, 2022). Key publications include "Culture wars and the family in Southeast Asia: ‘Asian values’, human rights and LGBT politics in the 21st century" (2025), "LGBT rights claiming and political participation in Southeast Asia" (2024), "Human rights in Southeast Asia: ASEAN’s rights regime after its first decade" (2021), and "Protecting the rights of LGBTIQ people around the world: Beyond marriage equality and the decriminalisation of homosexuality" (2021). With over 1,397 citations on Google Scholar, his work shapes discussions on ASEAN human rights regimes and queer international politics. He serves on the editorial boards of The Journal of Human Rights and the European Journal of Politics and Gender, and delivers public lectures such as "Ethics Amid Crisis" and "Navigating the Polycrisis".
