Dr Anthony Summers is a Lecturer in Nursing in the School of Health at the University of the Sunshine Coast. He has been qualified as a Registered Nurse for over 25 years and has held endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner since 2000, practicing in both the United Kingdom and Australia. His clinical experience spans numerous emergency departments in both countries, where as a Nurse Practitioner he specialized in minor injuries and ailments, orthopaedics, gynaecology, and image interpretation. More recently, his practice has included work in elderly care. He maintains clinical practice as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner.
Prior to joining the University of the Sunshine Coast, Dr Summers commenced his academic career as a Lecturer in Nursing at the University of Canberra, where he also completed his Professional Doctorate Nurse Practitioner (DNurs) in 2019. His other qualifications include a Master of Nurse Practitioner (MNursPract) from Queensland University of Technology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Nursing Practice (PGDipAdvNurPrac) from King's College London, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Honours) (BScNur Hons) from Canterbury Christ Church University, and a Diploma in Higher Education Nursing (DipHEdNur) from the University of Greenwich. Dr Summers' research specializations and academic interests focus on nurse practitioners, continuing professional development, emergency nursing, and academic integrity in healthcare students. His key publications include 'Navigating challenges and opportunities: Nursing student's views on generative AI in higher education' (Nurse Education in Practice, 2024, 63 citations), 'Continuing professional development in Australia: Barriers and support' (The Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing, 2015, 33 citations), 'Emergency management of hyperemesis gravidarum' (Emergency Nurse, 2012, 32 citations), 'Diagnosis and Treatment of Morton's neuroma' (Emergency Nurse, 2010, 29 citations), and 'Sore throats' (Accident and Emergency Nursing, 2005, 24 citations). Recent works also cover generative AI in nursing education, faculty views on student assessment, and general practitioners' attitudes towards nurse practitioners, demonstrating his influence on contemporary nursing education and practice.
